Ophthalmology is the medical evaluation of ocular pathology, evaluation of the oculus fundus, the taking of arterial pressure, the treatment of illnesses like conjunctivitis, cataracts and pterygion.

Those who need to use glasses in order to see clearly are carriers of so-called “refraction errors,” known as myopia, hypermetropia, and astigmatism, being the main ones. These refraction errors, which for the most part are attributed to defects in the cornea (the transparent lens which is found in the external part of the eye and through which the iris is observed, which is the green, blue, or brown part of the eye) result in images, which are not projected clearly onto the retina.

The eye might be compared to the photographic camera: if the lens is unfocused, the projected images are blurred on the film; in the same way, if defects of refraction exist, the images projected on the retina will be blurry.
