What are vaccinations?
Vaccines are simply biological medicines which when applied to healthy people trigger the defenses (antibodies) which act to protect them from future contact with infectious agents, thus avoiding infection or disease.
What are vaccinations good for?
Vaccinations are one of the sanitary measures that has produced and continues to produce the greatest benefit for mankind, preventing illnesses which once caused great epidemics, deaths and consequences. Vaccinations benefit not only the vaccinated person but also the unvaccinated and susceptible people who live nearby (group immunity).
Actually, in order to reduce the number of injections vaccines have been combined; that is to say, vaccinations in which there is one injection for various vaccines (i.e. the Hexavalent vaccine for diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus; Haemophilus influenza type B, polio and Hepatitis B). The number of doses and the time interval between each dose is, that is to say, the vaccination guideline, is important in order to achieve and good response and a more effective vaccination.
Who should be vaccinated?
Non-specific vaccinations are appropriate for the pediatric age group. However, in many cases epidemiological changes justify continuing with them in adulthood to avoid the re-emergence of diseases that seem to have already been controlled or to reinforce their immunological potency.
Although children receive the majority of vaccinations, adults too need to protect themselves with vaccinations against tetanus, diphtheria, pneumococcus, influenza, rubella…which can cause illnesses which are often more severe in adults than in children.
