To be a working mother? It is possible

San José, Costa Rica. May, 2015.

Working motherCombining maternity and work can be complicated for mothers, since the three month-leave is a short time to be with the child. This change becomes more difficult for those who have a baby for the first time.

According to Maria Solano, Chief of Maternity of the Clínica Bíblica Hospital, “the binomial formed by mother-child means that this separation is very painful, since we believe that nobody is going to take care of our child in the same way and even worse, we even feel we are being bad mothers for having to do this.”

It is important to manage this stage correctly, since if this is not so and if the mother does not trust the person who is left in charge of the baby, or even the tiredness that is generated between the work and continuing with routines and the care of the new-born baby, could generate a certain depression or anxiety.

It is normal for mothers to worry about all the details. “We know that the person who is going to be in charge of our child will be a great influence on learning and habits, which is why one must seek a trustworthy person who has experience in caring for children, who will know your customs and values,” added Ms. María Solano.

The most important thing is that the mother feels secure and somewhat calmer. It is recommended that the caregiver should begin to work a few weeks before the mother goes back to work, not only to get to know the person and show her the care of the new-born baby, but also for the child to begin recognizing the person and creating some empathy.

If you have the possibility of having your baby nearby, there is no problem in going back to work after a month. What is important is to offer quality in the attention and that both are able to establish ties of affection.

Both for the mother as well as for the new-born baby, the separation is going to bring certain changes of behavior, such as crying, loss of appetite, sleep disorders. If the baby is still breast-feeding, these may be more marked.

Working and being a mother demands a great effort, but it has been proven that it is not impossible. It is important that the mother does not forget to devote a little time for herself. That way, her baby will have a happy mother although not full-time, and what is most important, when they are together they can enjoy quality moments.

A recommendation from the expert in caring for children is that before you go to work, try to breast-feed the baby so that is left as full as possible and also for the mother to have a lapse of about three hours for the extraction of milk and thus avoid the accumulation in the breasts, which could generate mastitis.
