Bruises are not a health risk for people

San José, Costa Rica. July 2015.

BruisesBruises are common in all human beings. These are a lesion on the skin surface after a blow, trauma or fall, where the capillary or superficial vessels are broken. It sounds serious but generally, there is nothing to worry about.

According to Dr. Katerine Rodriguez, from general medicine of the Clinica Biblica Hospital, “there are specific situations where people more easily present bruises, but it is not frequent that they do so. These arise because the blood vessels break due to the blow and there are other pathological conditions that must be studied. There are people who are more likely to have them.”

If the condition is a person who falls and presents a trauma, nothing happens; there is no risk. If it is a person who is already anticoagulated, or if he/she is a senior adult and frequently falls, this already affects his/her health. If there are many bruises in his/her body it is because there is something wrong. There could be problems with coagulation, capillaries, circulation, among others.

There are different products freely sold in the market that help to eliminate faster the bruises, depending on where they are located in the body, whether it is the face or arms where it is easier that they may disappear. They last longer on the legs and buttocks. Sometimes it may be helpful to put ice on the affected area.

“Depending on the blow or trauma, a type of bruise that is more than a simple bruise might be generated. If this does not disappear, it can accumulate in areas where regularly there is no blood, but in normal conditions, a bruise is harmless,” said Dr. Rodríguez.

It is important to never try to take out the blood from the bruises or the famous “crushed blood”, since this is deeper below the skin than we can imagine. To try to introduce something is generating more injury. It then becomes an open wound that could generate a greater bruise. There is going to be more rupture generated and wear and tear of the vessels.

Remember, generally, a good diet is always going to help, a diet rich in vegetables is going to help your circulatory system.
