The loss of balance is one of the causes of bad mobilization and is also closely related with falls, since as the years go by, the body´s muscular strength and tone diminish, so that senior adults are more likely to suffer a fall and therefore, further injury with multiple fractures.
According to Francisco Herrero, of the Clínica Bíblica Hospital,“it is normal to see a decrease of mobility in people as the years go by, since the human being experiences multiple changes on a physical level; one of them is the loss of muscular strength and mass, which limits mobility for the senior adult.”
Good mobility in senior adults contributes to keeping healthy, since this prevents diseases such as osteoporosis, falls, loss of balance, decrease of muscular strength and tone, as well as allowing them to perform daily activities independently, such as walking and bathing among others.
The decrease of mobility may be delayed with healthy life habits, such as doing physical exercise at least 30 minutes every day and with an adequate diet. An adequate diet is going to allow a good functioning and physical performance of the muscles and joints of people in general, to that good mobility is associated with a balanced diet.
“Physical exercise is considered a basic element for the well-being of senior adults, since all the exercise programs provide flexibility, strength, resistance, and muscular relaxation, very important components for good mobility,” said Herrero.
The recommendation for keeping good mobility throughout life is to do physical exercise from childhood up to the senior adult stage. This will allow keeping levels of adequate muscular strength, flexibility and resistance regardless of age.
“If during your life you have not been a physically active person and you are already a senior adult, it is always possible to improve mobility your body if you join a regular physical exercise program according to your capabilities” concluded Herrero.
