Physiotherapy for Treating the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

San José, Costa Rica. June, 2016.

túnel carpianoHand pain, tingling, burning… Have you experienced these symptoms?

If the answer is affirmative, then it could be you are experiencing the carpal tunnel syndrome. This ailment appears when the median nerve at the carpal level (or what is more commonly known as the wrist) is trapped. This is a more frequent pathology in women.

Generally, this ailment is originated by repetitive movements or bad postures at the work place. Over time, it may even become usual to perceive the loss of strength in the hands.

As Fabián González Gutiérrez, physical therapist of the Clínica Bíblica Hospital, explains, “People are usually advised that they should stretch every upper limb, including the neck, once in a while since you must remember that the median nerve originates from the cervical spine.”

Nevertheless, if the symptoms persist, it is advised to visit a physical therapist to receive more specific treatment, which initially is usually conservative with the purpose of modifying bad postures and stretching. In some cases, treatment may be surgical and, later on, an adequate physiotherapeutic treatment is initiated to help the patient recover the functionality of the hand.
