Avoid risk factors, learn more about cancer

prevención contra el cáncer de mamaAccording to what the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates and also the World Report on Cancer 2014, by the IARC, “this disease has become one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality on a world level” and our country is not the exception.

In 2012, the number of new cases reached 14 million and there were 8.2 million deaths related with cancer. The most common types in women were breast cancer, colon and rectum, lung, cervix and stomach cancer. Men presented mostly, lung, prostate, colon and rectum, stomach and liver cancer.

Prevention means a longer and better life

Although it is not possible to avoid suffering from cancer, early detection helps with its cure. Knowing the signs and initial symptoms of some types of cancer is fundamental for its diagnosis and treatment on time.

According to statistics from WHO, more than 30% of the deaths caused by cancer, could be avoided by modifying or avoiding the main risk factors, for example:

  • Tobacco consumption
  • Overweight / obesity
  • Unhealthy diets with insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables
  • Physical inactivity
  • Drinking alcoholic beverages
  • HPV and HBV infections
  • Ionizing and non-ionizing radiations
  • Air pollution in cities
  • Smoke generated by the burning of solid fuels

According to WHO, it is anticipated that the number of new cases will increase in approximately 70% in the next 20 years.
